Get answers to common questions about Wicks Start.
A typical Wicks Start session takes between 2 to 5 hours depending on hair density, size of wicks desired, and detangling needs. We assess hair beforehand and provide a more precise time estimate during consultation.
When performed correctly, the oil treatment, gentle shampooing, and careful detangling minimize breakage. Crochet starts are safe, but success depends on hair health and technique. Our stylists evaluate and adapt methods to protect fragile strands.
Follow our aftercare plan: keep scalp moisturized with recommended oils, avoid excessive manipulation, wash gently with recommended products, and sleep with a satin scarf. Regular maintenance appointments help your wicks mature properly.
Chemically treated hair may require extra care or a modified technique. We evaluate condition during consultation and may recommend strengthening treatments or delay the service until hair is healthy enough for safe wick formation.
Wicks Start uses a crochet needle to form compact, defined wicks after an oil treatment, wash, and detangling. Traditional methods may use twisting or interlocking; Wicks offer faster, uniform formation and a neater early appearance.
We typically recommend maintenance every 4 to 8 weeks during the first year, depending on growth rate and wick size. Regular visits reduce matting, keep neat roots, and support healthy maturation of your locs.
